BREAST CANCER ANGELS
Breast Cancer angels
A portion of your cabin
price will go towards raising money for this non profit!

The Mission of Breast Cancer Angels is to provide financial and emotional assistance for women and their families as they are going through breast cancer treatment. Every year we assist more then 400 clients and their families and every year the need grows.

"We are in critical need of "Angels" so together we can continue this important work."

We are the only organization in Southern California that is financially assisting, on an ongoing basis, women (and men) that have long term metastatic breast cancer. Some of our clients were homeless when they were sent to us. Some needed food or help with their rent or utilities. They all needed to know that someone cared.

Alaska
Travel Tips

Alaska-1
It is a general rule in Alaska that visitors should dress in layers, and Southeast Alaska is no different. The Inside Passage receives a fair amount of rain due to the fact that is resides within the Tongass National Forest, the nation's only temperate rainforest. It's also why the vegetation is so full and the landscape is so lush. The rain contributes to the significant beauty of the Inside Passage and visitors will tell you, a little rain never stopped anyone. See Inside Passage Climate & Weather for a complete clothing guide.

Wherever you go, you'll find unique Alaskan products and crafts. Be sure to look for the "Made in Alaska" logo, which indicates an item genuinely manufactured in Alaska. If you find a silver hand logo, it identifies the item as a Native Alaskan Handicraft.Handcrafted items, made of walrus ivory and other by-products of subsistence hunting, provide an income source for Native Alaskan artisans and a valuable investment for the buyer. Be careful though - some wildlife products cannot be transported through customs without special permits. Visitors are advised to mail these souvenirs home to avoid confusion at the border.

Alaska Packing List and Tips

Clothing you can layer: Long underwear, a fleece, and a waterproof/breathable shell

Comfortable shoes with good traction: Running shoes with good support are adequate for anything you'll do except hike steep hillsides (which you may not do). If you prefer something sturdier, lightweight hikers are great, and some are waterproof as well.

Sun protection: Lightweight, brimmed hat (sun and rain); sunglasses and sunscreen

Light winter cap/gloves/scarf: These really keep you warm if it gets unseasonably cold-or if you're feeling the effects of glacier-chilled wind-without adding a lot of weight.

Summer clothing: Unless you prefer last-minute local shopping, pack shorts and short sleeve shirts. Recent Alaskan summers have been hot and sunny.

Formal vs. casual: Casual dress is the way to go in Alaska. Some cruise-goers bring formal attire for onboard the ship, then break out the jeans on land.

Mosquito repellent: The bugs generally aren't as bad as people fear, and they're really only a big consideration in June and July. If you really want to protect yourself, there's nothing as effective as 100% DEET products. Mosquito head nets tend to be overkill unless you plan on doing a lot of hiking or tent camping, as they obscure visibility and can get warm.

Fishing license: You can order this ahead of time online, but it's easy to obtain from your air taxi, fishing guide, or most local groceries.

Small first aid kit: Most hotels and tour operators will have you covered, but it's convenient to have Band-Aids and ointment for minor emergencies

Camera/ video camera: Capture your Alaska experiences on film and don't forget the extras: film, batteries, lenses, chargers, and memory cards. NOTE: Pack film in your carry-on, rather than your checked luggage, as new airport screening equipment could ruin it.

Backpack or tote bag (medium to large)

Binoculars/spotting scope

Zipper-top bags: Freezer-size zipper-top bags are great to keep clothing folded and toiletries isolated (in case of leaks). Separate baggies make it easier to repack in case your luggage is searched, and extra bags are handy for storing dirty or damp clothing.

Identification and/or passport

Watch/ alarm clock: With so much daylight, it's easy to lose track of time.

Swimsuit: Your hotel may have hot tub, sauna, or pool facilities-or you may want to invigorate yourself with Alaska lake swimming (no kidding!).

Contact information: Bring cards with your contact information to give to new friends and mailing labels for sending postcards

What about tipping onboard the ship? How does that work? How much do I tip the steward? How often?

Usually you will find general tipping guidelines left in your cabin. But as a general rule, leave at least $3 per day for your steward and the waiter in the dining room (paid at the end of your trip). You generally also leave about half that amount for your busser. Of course, if you receive exceptional service, you can always tip more.

What are good side trips/land excursions for various ports?

Alaskan cruises usually offer a large variety of side trips/ land excursions. For example, in Ketchikan, a great shore excursion is the float plane trip to Misty Fjords National Monument, which is simply breathtaking. In Juneau, an excellent choice is the helicopter dog sled tour, which gives you an amazing aerial tour of glaciers, followed by a real Alaskan dog sled ride atop one of the glaciers. In Sitka, a really interesting underwater tour on Alaska's only semi-submersible ship is offered by Sealife Discovery Tours. Finally, in Skagway, a trip on the White Pass Railroad into Canada's Yukon Territory is a no-miss, with truly beautiful scenery along a track that dates back to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. Of course, these are just some of the available options and a wonderful array of excursions is available in every Alaskan port.

Alaska Cruise Glossary

Aft - The back of the ship
Ahead - located in front of the ship's bow
Amidships - Toward the middle of the ship (also midship)
Ashore - On land
Astern - Behind the ship
Beam - Widest part of the ship
Bearing - Compass point direction into which the ship is headed
Below - Anything beneath the main deck
Berth - A bed; also a space to anchor or moor (tie up) the ship
Bilge - Lowest inner part of the ship's hull
Blast - Sound of the ship's horn
Bow - Front of the ship
Bridge - Place where the Captain and Officers control the ship
Bulkhead - Any wall aboard the ship
Buoy - A floating marker moored to the bottom of the sea or tied to an anchor
Cabin - A passenger guestroom; also called a stateroom
Cast Off - To release the lines that tie the ship to the pier
Chart - A nautical map to guide the ship
CLIA - Cruise Line International Association
Come about - Turn the ship around
Course - Direction in which the ship is headed
Davit - Device for raising and lowering the lifeboats

Disembark - to leave the ship (also Debark)
  • Is there a cell phone reception while the ship is in the sea?

Very rarely. Often there is no reception even at the ports where the ship stops. Some people might get reception and/or digital roaming service at some points in their journey, but overall you shouldn't count on using your cell phone while enjoying your Alaskan cruise trip. If this is critical for you, you can check your cell phone provider's coverage map to see if any or all of the ports have coverage on your plan, but be careful about the roaming charges.

  • Is there Internet access on the ships?

Usually there is, but it can be somewhat expensive (say $10 per 30 minutes). Most people either don't use the Internet or just use it briefly to check their email. Some ships offer Wifi in the common areas or wired connections in the cabins, but the speed tends to be pretty slow, in addition to being pricey. If you are addicted to email, your best bet is to check for free or low-cost Wifi in each of the ports. It's easiest to find in Juneau, but it's available in Skagway and Ketchikan as well. In Skagway, look for the Skagway Bazaar on 6th and Broadway (hard to miss, it's a small town!) and in Ketchikan at the Best Western (free) and in McDonalds (for a fee).
  •

What should I take with me on my cruise?

First of all, you should take binoculars and pack layers of clothing, especially remembering a waterproof windbreaker or raincoat of some sort. Also remember to pack sun block - those glaciers reflect a lot of the sun's rays. And don't forget your still camera and video camera, along with loads of tape and film (or memory cards). There is simply so much to photograph along the cruise route and film, video tapes, and especially memory cards are very expensive onboard or even in port stores.

10 Reasons to Purchase Travel Insurance

There are hundreds of circumstances that could cause you to cancel your trip, return home early or force you to seek emergency medical treatment while traveling.

    1. It's 10 p.m. and you and your immediate family arrive at the airport for a connecting flight, only to find that your flight has been cancelled. Who can assist you with finding new flights to get everyone home?
    2. Your bag was lost with your insulin inside. You need help to locate your bag as soon as possible and have your emergency prescription filled. Who do you call?
    3. Your first visit to Europe, and your passport and wallet are stolen. Where do you turn for emergency cash, and how will you get your passport replaced?
    4. You're involved in an accident and adequate medical treatment is not available. Who will help arrange and pay for a medical evacuation?
    5. If your sister-in-law becomes seriously ill and you must cancel your trip, what happens to your non-refundable deposits or pre-payments?
    6. You arrive in Jamaica and your luggage doesn't. If it's lost, who will help you find it? If it's delayed, who will pay for your necessities? If it's stolen, who will pay to replace it?
    7. Your cruise line, airline or tour operator goes bankrupt. Who will pay for your non-refundable expenses? Who will help get you to your destination?
    8. You're walking down a street in Rio and twist your ankle. Who can help you find an English-speaking physician?
    9. Three weeks before your scheduled arrival, a terrorist incident occurs in the city to which you are planning to visit. Who will pay if you want to cancel your trip?
    10. You are at a beach resort in North Carolina, and you are forced to evacuate due to an approaching hurricane. Who will help you evacuate and who will reimburse your lost vacation investment

Attention, everyone. Listen for interesting announcements from the bridge. Often it's the captain talking about course headings, temperatures, etc., perhaps in an amusing European accent. These are not always broadcast direct to the stateroom unless you tune in to a certain channel on your television.
